About: BEYOND GREAT EXPECTATIONS

This body of work examines the quiet, intimate and reflective moments that occur before and after the many responsibilities of a woman’s everyday life.

I depict my subject matters in quiet, contemplative moments, the calm after the storm, a moment of intimacy and self-reflection. In doing so I shine a light on the great expectations put upon women in their homes, workplace and society at large that are not deemed worthy of discussion or praise. The seconds, minutes, or hours after the work is done, the kids are fed, the door is closed.

Through the intuitive application of texture and color, I express the expectations of the roles we play as partner, lover, caretaker, mother, friend, worker and confident through all the stages of life. Working with a contemporary palette, I favor gray and blue over color-correct skin tones when depicting the body in order to represent the diverse, global female population.

Women in art for centuries have been depicted through the male gaze, sexualized and romanticized. As a woman and an artist, I treat my subjects with the utmost sincerity and respect, honoring the dignity of the figure and its humanity. The moments captured are otherwise unseen, private and intimate. A worker’s quiet reflection after a day’s work. A Mother taking a moment of rest, a lover recovering from heartache. The figures captured alone, contemplating the great expectations placed upon them.
